Hidden hunger: why micronutrients decide your final yield

Farmers watch nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium because the response is visible. Micronutrients — zinc, boron, iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum — work differently. A shortage seldom kills the plant; it limits what the plant can do with everything else you have already paid for.

The symptoms are easy to miss or misread: pale striping between the veins, poor flowering, small or hollow fruit, badly filled grain tips, patchy uneven ripening. Any of these can also be caused by water stress or disease, which is why guessing is expensive.

Two things make the difference. A soil test, ideally before the season, tells you what your field is actually short of. Then correction at the right growth stage — most micronutrient responses are stage-specific, and the window for flowering or grain fill does not come back.

Micronutrient inputs are cheap relative to the yield they protect, but they are not a substitute for a balanced base dose or for soil organic matter. Treat them as the finishing correction on a well-fed crop, not as a rescue for an underfed one.
